Unlike permanent chemical hair dyes, henna coats the outside of the hair shaft which is why hair can look so glossy and smooth. However this means that you can't use chemical hair dyes to try to amend or change the hair colour that was produced by henna, because the chemicals can't get though to the middle of the hair shaft to react with the natural coloured pigment melanin which is what normally happens when you dye your hair.
